Skylights leak when they’re exposed to water. This can happen when there’s a hole in the roof that lets water into the attic space. The solution is to repair the leak before it causes damage.

Check the Roof

If you notice any holes in the roof, check them out immediately. You should also make sure that the flashing around the skylight is intact. If it isn’t, then you’ll need to replace it.

Seal the Skylight with an Elastomeric Sealing Tape

To prevent leaks, use elastomeric sealing tape to cover the hole in the roof. This will keep water from getting into the attic space.

Apply a Waterproofing Paint or Coating

If you’re unsure what paint or coating to apply, check with an expert first. You’ll need to ensure the material is appropriate for your roof type.

Install a Weatherstrip

A weatherstrip is a strip of rubber or flexible material that goes around the edge of a door frame or window frame. They keep water out by sealing it against the wall.

Replace the Skylight

If your skylight leaks, you should replace it with a new one. You can find replacement skylights at home improvement stores.
